Currently we are facing a global economic crisis which makes the job market very competitive. Are you currently looking for employment and not having much luck with your ratio of follow up contact to get to the next step (and interview)? Follow these diy resume tips to ensure your resume shines…

Link The Benefits To Your Skills

Most of the resumes I see within my resume Melbourne business list duties that the applicant has been responsible for but lacks the foresight to spell out the benefit an employee would gain from it. Refer to the following example:

A welders resume might state that he “has a welding certification and high specs for quality workmanship”. This statement lacks an explanation of how this would benefit the employer’s bottom line. The real benefit is that the employee can obtain a higher volume of completed product and less time with quality assurance, inspection of unapproved work.

The welder may also have some quality assurance processes or procedures to contribute to raise the standards of the work floor which would ultimately save the employer money.

A better statement for this would be:

• Achieved top production volume by maintaining high degree of accuracy and quality for overall workmanship
• Cut labor expense by over $4500 annually by eliminating the need for additional quality assurance inspection hours to be worked.

Match Your Intended Salary With Your Vision

While writing your resume ensure you are matching your words and descriptions to the level of position and pay you are seeking. Create a vision with your words that shows you are good value appropriate to the level.

Don’t undersell yourself by using words like “entry level” or starting position saught.
Rather, replace these terms with utilizing my previous skills, or experience so you let the employer decide what level you are at rather than you underselling yourself as a beginner.

Order Your Resume With Prioritizing

This is a very common mistake that leaves the important information getting lost amongst all the mundane duties. As you put your statements together, ensure you keep the important, impressive relevant statements up the top. A strong statement using keywords and measurable descriptions (like a dollar amount saved or number of jobs complete etc) will stand out and be remembered.

Alter Your Resume To Match Each Job

Finally I cant stress enough how important it is to update your resumes to alter your wording for every job application.

Even though you may not have had any extra jobs or experience since you used your resume, as you can see every job has varied power words, benefits and underlying needs that cant go without being addressed if you really want to score an interview.

Even just rewording your job descriptions can make an unbelievable difference. A good resume service should offer updating of your resume at an hourly rate to make this cost effective. After all, how much do you want the job? Good luck with your job searching.

Self discipline more….

Before I present to you my list of really good web tools that I promise will help you to work remotely, I should bring to your attention one more pearl of wisdom about self discipline and specifically to do with maintaining your focus and powers of concentration

I’ve discovered and confirmed a common habit in men and women who work on the web and I’ve been in contact with for some time and I call this trait the fifty minute rule. I discovered these men and women who focus and work for 50 minutes and then kick back for a whole ten mins. rest and are much more efficient and generate a substantially greater quality of work than men and women who don’t have set working methods.

OK as promised for your consideration is my list of favourite remote working online services:

Electronic Mail

Google Mail costs nothing. For my money the search and label (a bit like folders) features are second to none. The only disadvantage so far is that I have seen it run quite slowly on lower spec.computers

Phone calls

Skype
used to drive me crazy as the connection performance was atrocious, but three cheers for the developers at Skype now as they have substantially changed the quality of the service. For few dollars a month Skype lets me call and conference in any handset and Skype subscriber in the world. The current edition of Skype has an abundance of very useful features and there is an ever growing list of useful add on applications.

Organising Content

Evernote
has acquired in excess of a million users in a very short space of time – it enables you to store, organise and annotate any species of digital content on the web. Just go check it out…it’s free.

Invoicing, Time and Expenses capture, Accounting and CRM

You definitely know that my urge to work remotely was originally motivated by Quickbooks Online, a small business accounting software web application. But it is shadowed by the free edition of salesorder.com – a lead to cash system that’s as easy to use as a fork I looked at NetSuite whose pricing (and people) scared me off. My choice here is salesorder.com – Go check it out.

The most cited reason men and women fail to adjust to operating remotely is they fail to recognise the criticality of having first class organisation and rigid self discipline.

I have been operating remotely for over seven years since I first uncovered Quickbooks online an ‘on demand’ small business accounting software service and was motivated by the fact that if you can do accounting on the net then why shouldn’t it be viable to do other important types of work away from the conventional office?

Whilst working remotely has a lot of positives there are numerous mistakes that people make which turn into issues that cause cuts in productivity and reduced morale. The most significant reason for reductions in work output from remote professionals is distraction and it is a established and well known fact that it can take a worker up to 0.33 hours to return to their original efficiency level after experiencing a distraction.

Research also shows that persons who are consistently subjected to disturbances are more likely to be susceptible to reduced memory power and are prone to developing mental health issues in later life. We live in an over communicated environment and it is important that you know the issues this causes before you commence working remotely. When operating remotely you should do everything possible to minimise the risk of being disrupted.

Here are my most important tips:

1, Get a routine, communicate it to absolutely everyone and stick to it!

Good examples are a fixed time of day when you check or send e-mail and make or receive phone calls. Before I began working remotely I used to get in the region of two hundred e-mails in 24 hours. Now I think I am unfortunate if I receive in excess of four. To ’reset’ my electronic mail experience I altered my e-mail address and obsessively took steps to look after the details being made known to anyone. I then ‘trained’ every party who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it wisely and sparingly. I also set up an automatic response that swiftly told anyone sending me mail my schedule for processing mail and if someone needed my urgent attention to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

2. Get rid of alerts.

Disable every feature that can send you a visual or audible alert. This includes mobile and
ordinary telephones and forms of alerts from e-mail such as visual alerts, beeps, screen changes to your inbox list and of course facing a window. Get a door on your study and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

In ‘Remote Working Part 3 – Essential tools’ I will reveal my favourite tools and software.

Quickbooks online

Obviously not everybody can work remotely as some vocations require people to be at their place of work or travel to undertake their work face to face. But for those of us given the opportunity to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and present some practical wisdom by distributing it on the web in the hope that I could give others valuable advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I can tell you that there are a lot of self proclaimed ‘gurus’ on the net who will try and sell you e-books for significant sums of cash, trust me you don’t have to do this.

I am fortunate to be able to work in whatever location I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to get an idea of how I am able to work remotely. Don’t be mislead here I am still perfecting the art of remote working as all of the time I bump into individuals online who teach me new tricks and I am repeatedly discovering new systems and approaches that make my life easier and make me more effective.

Over the past 7 years I have slowly but surely adapted my working processes to enable me to do most of my work remotely with a mixture of online tools and solid self discipline. One day whilst exploring the Internet I discovered Quickbooks online and this brought to my attention what just might be possible. The encounter with ’cloud’ based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a ‘light bulb’ moment for me and the launch pad of my ‘remote working journey’.

I want to say up front that successfully working remotely is as much about the software as it is about self management. Working remotely also means getting across to your team members, supervisors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will keep in touch with you.

In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – The art of working smarter ‘ I show you how to focus.
